1099 Points – The final section of the climb to St Guérin Reservoir, in the heart of the Beaufortain, is very strenuous but the magnificent countryside will take your mind off tired legs. And, on the descent, you can stock up on calories at the Beaufort cooperative dairy!

Grignon

924 Points – Despite the poor road surface, this route is well worth seeking out if you like steep climbs, as it includes 10-km at more than 9%. Take care on the descent - the slower you go, the more time you will have to enjoy the views of the Bauges Mountains!

1136 Points – This variant on the classic climb to the Col du Joly has the advantage of being slightly easier and quieter, while offering the same outstanding view of Mont Blanc.

The climb to the Col des Aravis is strenuous but pleasant and the view of the Mont Blanc Massif from the pass is magnificent. To do a circuit, go over the Col de la Croix-Fry and the Col des Marais to Saint-Ferréol, and then follow the greenway to Ugine.

Col du Pré

1059 Points – The steep climb to the Col du Pré goes through the picturesque and protected hamlet of Boudin. We would recommend descending via the other side of the pass in order to see the beautiful Roselend Reservoir.

A short climb is followed by a wonderful quiet road overlooking the Combe de Savoie and the entrance to the Maurienne Valley. On the way back, in front of the fort at Aiton, a viewpoint indicator explains local place names and the history of the fort.

1158 Points – This little known climb has a relatively poor road surface but it is worth doing for the steepness of the ascent. Its 28 switchbacks through the forest include a 10-km section with a mean gradient of 9.3%. You will appreciate the shade!

Valpelouse

1360 Points – One of the top 10 Cycloclimbing Challenges. It includes 10 kilometres at an average gradient of 9.9%, a record for France, but care is needed as parts of the road near the top are in very poor repair.

From Albertville, take the greenway that forms the start of the cycleroute to Annecy. Then overcome the steep climb to Thénésol before following a fabulous little road along the foothills of the Bauges, facing the Beaufortain and the Grand Arc.
